Sparks and Crash has decided to implement work teams. Each team is composed of two engineers and eight skilled
assembly workers. The idea is to facilitate communication and to promote worker autonomy. It will get the
engineers on the production floor with the workers, seeing assembly problems. It will also give the workers access
to the engineers for real-time feedback and answers.
Unfortunately, the teams are not working out so well and you are asked to investigate. You walk the floor and
observe the teams in action. You note that the engineers cannot seem to get a word in and only acquiesce as they
are drowned out by the larger bunch of skilled workers.
No one seems to know what they are supposed to be doing. Team members wander around without direction or
guidance. Decision-making is non-existent. Furthermore, some of the teams have begun to view the new
arrangement as a performance competition among teams. They have begun to hoard resources for their own use
and preventing other teams from doing their work.
Your objective is to write a proposal for SC Co. to define the problem and describe an intervention that would help
address the issue.
